Over the past month or so my energy and motivation levels have been quite low. I feel like constantly working in front of a screen has been slowly draining my energy. I haven’t been the best about prioritizing getting out of my apartment and meeting with people in-person.
I’ve been working to remind myself of two things:
1. I need to be mindful of how I talk to myself and how my inner voice is helping or hurting me.
2. It’s important to make sure that I’m present in the lives of others and acknowledge what they’re doing and experiencing, both in-person and online (I particularly feel like I need to pay attention to this on LinkedIn.).
One thing that was helpful was a coffee and talk meeting a few weekends ago. It happened at a coffee shop in my neighborhood, and about 10 people showed up. There were people from all over, and it was interesting hearing their stories about what brought them to Chile and their experiences living in other parts of the world. We talked about our favorite expressions in Chilean Spanish, cultural differences, what we enjoy doing in our free time, and future plans and goals.
I’ve been living in Santiago for over 16 years now, and over that time my social circle and connections have changed. Some friends have left Chile, and other connections came to an end in other ways. In any case, this event was a really nice reminder about the importance of getting out and cultivating new connections. It was a success, and they’re actually having another meeting this coming weekend.
Have you also had the experience of spending too much time in front of screens? Is there anything that you’re doing that helps you to maintain social connections in-person?
Thanks for reading and feel free to leave a comment about your experience.
