Preparing for TESOL International

I’m at Panera Bread, putting the finishing touches on my presentation for TESOL International.

It’s hard to believe that I’ll be there in less than a week. This will be my first in-person ELT conference since 2019, and it will be my first time presenting in 6 years. Despite that, I’m feeling good about it. I was able to do a practice run of the presentation with some friends, and it helped me get a sense of the timing as well as some things to tweak.

Anyone that knows me well knows that I’m a planner. I snapped a quick picture of some of the materials I’m using for the presentation as well as the title screen of the PowerPoint to give people an idea of what to expect:

I had forgotten how much work goes into giving a quality presentation until I started preparing again. The PowerPoint has gone through a few revisions, supporting materials have been printed out, sentence cards are prepared, and the handout to follow along is also ready. This time around I’m also making use of QR codes, something which I’ve never done before. Despite changes in terms of technology and our students, one thing remains the same; we need to actively engage learners, and as a presenter I feel the obligation to actively engage the audience.

If you’re interested in attending, my session is on Thursday March 21st at 3:00 PM in room 418/419. If you’re unable to attend, I imagine there will be a recording available afterwards.
