Coaching FAQs

Coaching is the act of helping a person take steps towards their goals through the use of powerful questions to determine various paths forward. It involves working through roadblocks. Some typical challenges people face are taking action, developing a growth mindset, and dealing with challenging interpersonal relationships.

As a coach, I am the facilitator and help guide the conversation. As a participant, you will co-construct the coaching session to determine the topic, goal, and how to move forward.

Consultants use their expertise to tell you what to do and what path to take. As a coach, I see each participant as the expert of themselves; I help explore beliefs and patterns and ultimately let a participant decide what step to take forward.

Coaching helps you understand your past and present to help shape the future that you want. When appropriate, I will step outside the coaching role and share resources and information that can be helpful.

Coaching sessions are hyper-focused. Setting an agenda, talking through an issue, and deciding on a course of action only takes 20 to 30 minutes. While that can seem like a short time, it is enough time to determine a meaningful path forward with the next step.

I’m not a psychologist, and I do not have a medical degree. If you are dealing with issues that require attention from a mental health professional such as substance abuse, domestic violence, depression, or similar issues coaching is not right for you. In the same way, coaching is not a substitute for therapy or treatment from a mental health professional.

In 2021 I took a course titled “Coaching Skills and Mindfulness Practices For Educators” offered through the California World Language Project. The course combined theory, practice, and coaching with other participants. Since then I have been able to develop my coaching skills by continuing to work with other participants from the same course.

There is an international coaching certification available through the International Coaching Federation. In full transparency I don’t that qualification, at least not yet.

Due to the time needed to see results, coaching requires a 3-month commitment. After that, it can continue on a month-to-month basis.
